Rust Gambling Glossary: Odds, Edge, RTP and Fairness
Rust gambling pages mix mathematical, cashier and account-policy terms. This glossary keeps those layers separate so a percentage, verification label or bonus headline is not given a meaning it does not support.
Probability and return
Probability describes the chance of a defined outcome. Expected value weights every possible credited result by its probability. RTP expresses expected return as a percentage of the stake under one complete ruleset, while house edge is its complement when both figures cover the same wager and fees.
- Probability: chance of one defined event
- Expected value (EV): probability-weighted average credited result
- Return to player (RTP): expected return divided by stake
- House edge: 100% minus comparable RTP
- Variance: how widely individual outcomes can differ from the average
Fairness inputs
A server seed is a secret input controlled by the game system; a commitment is usually a hash published before the result. A client seed adds participant or public input, and a nonce distinguishes repeated rounds. Verification reproduces a completed calculation—it does not establish solvency, eligibility or withdrawal performance.
- Hash commitment
- Revealed server seed
- Client seed
- Nonce
- Roll mapping and verifier
Fees, bonuses and balances
Rake is a disclosed deduction from a pool or settlement. A deposit or withdrawal spread is a valuation difference, not automatically rake. Wagering requirements determine how much qualifying play is needed before restricted bonus funds can become withdrawable; game contribution describes how much of a wager counts toward that target.
Account and cashier terms
KYC means identity or customer verification. AML refers to anti-money-laundering controls. A trade hold delays transfer under Steam rules; withdrawal inventory is the set of items currently offered by a cashier. None of these terms guarantees that an account is eligible or a transaction will complete.
Practical verification table
Use this as a record sheet. The checks describe what to capture, not a guarantee that a destination will meet the condition.
| Stage | What to record | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Percentage | Exact numerator, denominator and applicable rules | Odds, RTP and edge are not interchangeable without a complete wager model. |
| Value | Balance unit and valuation source | Site credit, Steam Wallet value and cash value can differ. |
| Fairness | Commitment, seed, nonce and roll mapping | The words provably fair do not identify what can be reproduced. |
| Promotion | Wagering base, multiplier, contribution and expiry | A bonus headline omits the restrictions that define its cost. |
| Account | KYC trigger, eligibility and withdrawal conditions | Identity and cashier controls sit outside game mathematics. |
Worked example: RTP, edge and an external fee
A complete paytable with a 96-unit expected return per 100 units wagered implies 96% RTP and a 4% house edge under those same rules. A separate two-unit withdrawal charge is not automatically part of either percentage. It must remain a separate cost unless the published calculation explicitly includes it.
